The West Lake in mid-July has nothing worth seeing, except for the people who gather there on that day. The people of Hangzhou usually avoid going to the lake during the day and return home by evening, treating the moonlight as if it were an enemy. However, on this night, they are eager to be seen. They form groups and rush out, generously tipping the gate guards and waiting with lit torches along the shore. Once aboard their boats, they urge the boatmen to hurry toward the Broken Bridge to join the lively gathering.

Before the second watch (around 9-11 PM), the sounds of voices, drums, and music fill the air, creating a chaotic scene: people bumping into each other, boats colliding, and the shore crowded with countless figures. It is impossible to see anything clearly; one only sees paddles clashing, boats rubbing against each other, and faces pressed together.

After a while, the moon rises in the east, casting its light over the white poplar trees, and the lake becomes like a mirror again. The misty air fills with the fragrance of lotus flowers and the sound of distant flutes and pipes can be faintly heard. People then disperse quietly.
